MPP Published Map Files
The following table contains links to maps for the Madaba Plains Project. These maps were created for a variety of different projects and I thought some of you might be interested in using them. The originals were created using ArcGIS desktop software. They were then exported as PDF files. To view them, just click on the map, or on the links immediately below the map, and it should open in Acrobat Reader. From this point you can save the map to your own computer.
One of the nice features of these maps is that in Acrobat you can turn layers on and off. Just click on the layers tab on the left side of the Acrobat window -- click on the eyes to turn layers on or off.
Another nice feature is that these pdf documents print at very high quality.
I suspect that some of you might want to use these maps in documents you are creating. To do this, you will need to take one of three paths. 1) If you have the full version of Adobe Acrobat you can save them in a number of file formats -- jpeg, tiff, etc. 2) If you have Adobe Illustrator, you can open the maps and save them in an even greater number of file formats. 3) If you have no way to open these files, you can send me an email and ask me for help.
The table below lists the PDF's currently avaialable and describes the spatial datalayers that are contained in the map. Just click on the thumbnail to see the map.
If you have problems with downloads or file quality, or if you have specific requests for maps not found in the table, send an email to Gary Christopherson

Random Squares |
This map shows the 200m X 200m random sample units the hinterland survey used to insure an unbiased sample of archaeological sites, and to collect baseline ceramic and landuse data. The 100 squares represent just over 5% of the total project area. Overlain on shaded releif, this map also contains archaeological sites, wadis, and the project boundary. |

This map highlites sites in the Umayri region that have tombs among their feature list. These sites along with Tall al-Umayri, archaeological sites from the hinterland, wadis, and the survey boundary is overlaid on a shaded relief of the region. A locator map indicates where the Umayri region is in Jordan. |

This map features soil polygons for the Umayri Survey region. Created by Douglas W. Schnurrenberger from aerial photographs and field samples, the map identifies three varieities (based on composition and granularity) of terra rossa soil. In addition to the soil polygons overlain on shaded relief, the map also contains wadis, the project boundary and archaeological sites. This map is important because even a simple visual examination indicates a strong preference in antiquity for locating sites in or near ridge soils. These soils are the best agricultural soils, but also the most susceptible to erosion. |
